Project Name:  PPG Ford City                                   

Location:  Ford City, PA

Problem/Outcome:                         

Old landfill site had extremely high Ph seeps flowing into surface water from glass manufacturing facility closed in 80s. PADEP involved for interim remediation process to remedy problem short term. Rapid response was key issue due to prior media involvement. Land was prior Public Park accessible to public and site bordered the Allegheny River.

Ph was lowered using Acid addition to captured surface water, 7000 yards of Natural Wood Mulch was added to cover large areas resulting in reduction of Ph flow. System considerably lowered total Ph outflow to the satisfaction levels requested.

Description of Work:

Install cast in place concrete weir area for capturing surface water runoff. Install 900 ft- 12” HDPE conveyance pipe to in ground concrete collection basin. Install pre engineered building with Metering pump system for Sulfuric acid addition to lower Ph. Excavate and install 900ft long Riprap channel to capture surface water. Install 7000 yards of mulch on 3 main areas on site. Mulch was placed over steep hill sides, some over 250 feet.  Plant high Ph grass for growing new cover as requested by customer.

Site Size:   Entire site encompassed 125 acres.

Duration of project: 5 months

Equipment utilized on project:

Excavators, mobile cranes, portable belt conveyors, track loaders, rubber tire front loaders, dozers, skid steers, 250 ft. long -36 inch HDPE conveyance chute. 

Task Completed:  Original order was for interim work to lower Ph levels on out fall. System exceeded original expectations and may satisfy Ph control for long term remediation solution.
